Architecture in Cerca Carvajal

Architecture in Cerca Carvajal

Cerca Carvajal is situated about 30 minutes from the city of Hinche and about 2 hours from Port-au-Prince. Houses similar to the cinder block ones found in Pétion-Ville are also found here. See my other post about the architecture there. There is a feature on some of the houses I’ve never seen before. There are windows that have no glass. They contain lattice made of cement. Screens behind them keep out insects. Other houses were made with found materials. Think of…

Architecture in Pétion-Ville Haiti

Architecture in Pétion-Ville Haiti

The first thing I noticed as I entered the area of Haiti called Pétion-Ville was all the different types of architecture. Like many buildings in the Caribbean, cement and cinder block are the construction materials of choice. Visiting Puerto Rico some years ago, I was told it’s because of the large amount of termites. Homes start as grey cinder block frames with grates for windows. They transform into beautiful “stone castles” on the mountaintop. I learned that while people are…

Downtown Montreal Architecture

Downtown Montreal Architecture

The month of April brought me to Montreal, Quebec in Canada, to visit friends. I had visited Montreal in 2010 and hadn’t been back since. One of the things that stood out to me was the architecture. Many of the homes in La Salle reminded me of Queens,…

Abu Dhabi Architecture

Abu Dhabi Architecture

You may have heard about Abu Dhabi, but were not quite sure where it was. Many more people have heard of its fellow city-state Dubai. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates  (UAE), considered by many as the richest city in the world. I was able to visit both Dubai and Abu Dhabi on my recent trip to the UAE. One of the things that really stood out to me in Abu Dhabi was the architecture. One…

Dubai Architecture is Definitely ‘To Die For’

Dubai Architecture is Definitely ‘To Die For’

Before visiting the United Arab Emirates, I had seen pictures of the architecture and was blow away. When you boast the tallest building in the world you have a lot to live up to. When you see the Burj Khalifa in pictures it looks so impressive, but how would it stand up in person? Leaving the airport, I caught a glimpse of the glistening tower. And to be honest, I wasn’t that impressed. It was just another building standing next…

Spanish Revival Mansion in Connecticut

Spanish Revival Mansion in Connecticut

I’ve driven past this house so many times and it has always fascinated me. Who lives there? Who lived there? Those questions always went through my head. So I did a little digging. The house is definitely in need of some TLC, but beyond that you can still see its beauty. The beauty can be found in the whimsical wrought iron balconies and the stunning Spanish tile roof. You can’t help but imagine what type of family lived here? What…
