Customized Color Filters in Adobe Photoshop

Notice the customized color filters you see as you scroll through Instagram? It gives many feeds their uniform color Even though the images are different they all contain a cohesive color scheme that continues throughout the whole feed. How do they do that? Many use custom presets in Adobe Photoshop.

Step 1: Built-in Presets

Photoshop comes with a few different built-in preset options. Use Command (Ctlr) “M” to open the Curves Panel. Click on “Presets” and you will see the different RGB presets. These are the “filters” for your image. I used Medium Contrast for this example.

Step 2: Customized Color Presets (Filters)

To make your own custom preset, select “Custom” at the bottom of the list. You have the option to customize the image using all RGB channels (Red, Green and Blue) at once. Try customizing each channel separately. Go all out. Customize them together, then each one separately.

Step 3: Save Your Presets

Play around with the graph until the image has the look you are going for. Use the menu to the side of the presets to “Save Preset.” Now you’ll be able to add the preset you created to any other image. I named my preset “vintage” because I felt it gave my image a vintage feel. Name yours something that makes sense to you.

Step 4: Add Your Presets to Images

Next, choose an image you want to add your preset to. Select the custom preset you saved. Here I selected the one I called “vintage” that we just created. And there you have it. It has the same color tonality of the original image.
