An Exciting, Yet Laid-Back Brooklyn Weekend Getaway

A Brooklyn weekend getaway is the perfect way to ease into summer travel. Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. It’s located near Connecticut and has so much to offer. One weekend isn’t enough. You’ll have to go back.

Where to Stay – Brooklyn Weekend Getaway

Airbnb
I stayed at this Airbnb in May. It was in a quiet neighborhood. While it wasn’t centrally located, it was close enough to most places.

It’s a studio that includes an eating area (not pictured), bed area, kitchenette and bathroom.

What to Do -Brooklyn Weekend Getaway

Prospect Park
Prospect Park is a large park located within Brooklyn. You step into the park and forget you’re in the big city. It includes a lake, plenty of areas to play sports and more. Don’t forget to visit the zoo.

There is a farmer’s market at Prospect Park on Sundays from mid-May through mid-December. The market offers vegetables, fruits, baked goods, plants and flowers. You can even find fresh-caught fish.

Special events take place all throughout the warmer months. Check out their calendar of events for the full list.

Find seasonal ice and roller skating at the LeFrak Center. The center includes connecting covered and open rinks totaling 32,000 square feet of skating surface.

Industry City
This is a place you can spend an entire day. Industry City is a complex of 550 companies that range from design and art, all the way to technology and manufacturing. It is 6 million square feet of creativity and culture.

There are plenty of shops, galleries and workshops to visit. Watch artisans creating works of art.

Weeksville Heritage Center
In last week’s post, I talked about the Weeksville Heritage Center. It’s a great place to learn about Brooklyn’s past. The center uses education to preserve an important part of Black history in the U.S.

The houses included at the center were originally built by Dutch immigrants. Then they became part of one of the largest free Black communities in New York City.

The main building is home to an art gallery. Check the website for current exhibits.

Brooklyn Architecture
Brooklyn is known for its beautiful architecture. A Brooklyn weekend getaway isn’t complete without checking it out.

I’ve talked about the architecture of Columbia Heights on the blog before. There are so many great neighborhoods in Brooklyn.

There are brownstones and charming pre-war apartment buildings.

Then there are all the stately single-family houses. Those are an unexpected sight in the big apple.

Park Slope and Prospect Lefferts Garden are two great neighborhoods for spotting beautiful Brooklyn architecture.

Brooklyn Bridge
This is a Brooklyn weekend getaway, which means you won’t have too much time. So, seeing the Brooklyn Bridge may be a stretch. However, if you start your days early, you may have time.

Check out the Brooklyn Bridge and also the Manhattan Bridge. They are parallel to each another. If you don’t have time to walk across, taking an Uber across is a good option too.

Restaurants at Industry City
Experience worldwide cuisine. Choose from India Home Cooking, Ejen, which serves Korean Comfort food and so much more. The food hall at Industry City has lots of options.

Tutt Heights
Tutt Heights is a Middle Eastern restaurant offering great falafel and pizza. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love all things Middle Eastern. Tutt Heights specializes in pitas. They have a wide variety of appetizers such as hummus and tabbouleh.

Sea
Spend one of your evenings at Sea. They offer Thai food and a lively atmosphere. There is even a small pond located inside the restaurant. You will find better Thai food at a more authentic place. However, it’s the ambiance at Sea that really stands out.
