Lufthansa Economy Class Review – Airbus A340-600
Everyone has been talking about the Lufthansa Allegris suites that debuted this month. I had never flown Lufthansa, and I had no immediate plans to do so. That all changed on a recent trip. A last-minute change of plans meant I would fly on the Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 from Frankfurt, Germany to New York City.
Lufthansa Economy Class – Airbus A340-600
The Airbus A340-600 is one of the most unusual planes I’ve ever flown on. The plane is extremely long. The A340-600 is 7 FT 6.6 IN (2.3 M) longer than the A380.
The seats were comfortable (I am around 5′ 7″ /1.7018 M for reference.) and had enough room to stretch out.
In-Flight Entertainment (IFE)
The in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens were large and included a USB charging port. There was a large selection of movies, TV shows and games. Audio books were also available. Many international movies were available. This included recent movie releases.
There was a flight tracker. It was much more basic than what is found on newer Airbus planes. However, it did the job.
Food
The food on the flight was very good. We started off with crackers. They tasted like small Ritz brand crackers.
There was a vegetarian pasta option and a beef option. I chose the pasta option. It included ravioli in a pesto cheese sauce. I was very impressed.
All food was served with real silverware. There were a wide variety of sides served with the meals. Sides included bread, cheese, a vegetable dish and dessert. The layer cake for dessert was so moist. You would never believe I was eating cake on a plane.
Juice, hot beverages and wine were available free of charge. The “snack” served close to arrival, was a meal in itself. It was a cheese turnover that resembled a calzone.
Bathrooms
This is where the Airbus A340-600 really stands out. You need to take a flight of stairs down to the Economy class bathrooms.
Even the safety video was modified to include the unique bathrooms. If cabin pressure changes, masks drop down in the bathroom area. There are only 10 masks available. For this reason, no more than 10 people are allowed in this area at one time. People are also not allowed to line up on the stairs.
There is a secret mirrored door located in this area as well. It’s the door to the flight crew rest area. What a unique location! You wouldn’t even know it was there without close attention to detail.
The bathrooms themselves were of average size. There were four, however, one was out of service during the flight. They included a really nice scented handwash. It was white tea and vetiver scented.
I prefer the normal location of airplane bathrooms. It was a pain to have to walk down a flight of stairs just to use the bathroom during the flight. And the lines got so long since all the Economy bathrooms were located together.
Flight Attendants
The flight attendants were friendly and attentive. They walked throughput the cabin frequently enough.
Bonus
I flew Economy class, although I was able to view the Premium Economy, Business and First classes as I exited the plane.
Premium Economy
Premium Economy included larger seats with larger IFE screens.
Business Class
Both Business and First class appear outdated compared to what you would see on more modern Airbus planes.
However, from what I saw, the seats appeared to be soft and spacious. They lacked privacy. Don’t worry. The new Lufthansa Allegris suites plan on solving that issue.
First Class
Conclusion
Overall, I was very happy flying Lufthansa Economy class on the Airbus A340-600. The seats were spacious and offered a good pitch. The food was well seasoned. Entertainment options kept me well entertained. I recommend flying Lufthansa for a long-haul flight.
