New Haven Winter Day Trip Itinerary

Today we’re traveling along the Connecticut coastline for a New Haven Winter day trip. We will see where to visit and where to eat in the popular university city (home of Yale University) that is New Haven, Connecticut.

City Seed Farmer’s Market

Start your day at the CitySeed Farmer’s Market. It is located inside the gymnasium of the Conte West Hills Magnet School during the Winter months. (In the Fall, when I visited, it was still held at Edgewood Park on Sundays.) Visit the shops and check out local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to organic skincare.

Samad Gardens Initiative is one of the vendors that sells at the City Seed Farmer’s Market. They are based in Bloomfield, CT and sell herbal teas, seasonings and spices. Purchase their products at the farmer’s market. However, if you’re not local, check out their great selection on their online store.

IKEA

I’m sure you have heard of IKEA. This superstore is located in many countries. Walking through IKEA is a great New Haven winter day trip idea. Imagine walking around the maze that is IKEA, picturing yourself in your fantasy kitchen or living room. I’ve done this with friends, and it’s just a fun, laid-back activity.

Pick up lunch at the IKEA restaurant. Their Swedish meatballs are so good. Then head over to their market and pick up a few snacks for the road.

Million Asian Market

The next stop on our itinerary is the Million Asian Market. It’s a market that has items from many different Asian countries. Think Kimchi from South Korea and Lay’s potato chips from China. I purchased the Texas Grilled Barbecue Lay’s flavor and they were delicious. This market even sells live fish in the back.

These types of markets are so fun because they allow you to feel as if you’re traveling even when you’re staying close to home. They are the perfect addition to any New Haven Winter day trip.

Kung Fu Kitchen

After the Asian market, it’s time to try Dim Sum. It is a popular type of food eaten in Hong Kong. I have been to Hong Kong twice, and both times I didn’t leave the airport. This means I have been dying to try Dim Sum for a long time. Kung Fu Kitchen offers a large variety of Dim Sum. So, I was very excited to try their dishes.

During my first visit I tried their Xio Long Bao (shao-long-bow), which are dumplings filled with soup. I also tried the duck bao, bread buns filled with duck. Both were delicious. However, the duck bao buns were out of this world! I wholeheartedly recommend visiting Kung Fu Kitchen during any New Haven Winter day trip.

Another dinner option is Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, more popularly known as Pepe’s Pizza. New Haven has many famous restaurants, with Pepe’s being one of the top ones. Check out my New Haven Food Tour post for my Pepes’ Pizza review and more New Haven food recommendations.

  1. Nice post, Kelcy…
    A great winter day trip…with international flair…not far from home…good suggestions…
I plan on visiting a nearby city in Jackson, Georgia… according to one of the local shops they have a lot of visitors from all over the country and it’s a small town, but many sidewalks (a rarity for this part of the country) … hope to visit some of the vintage shops in the area too…
Thanks again for an interesting visual trip to New Haven, CT.
